Most people are eligible to enroll three months before turning 65 years old, during their birthday month, and three months after.

You can also sign up during the Medicare General Enrollment Period, which runs from January 1 – March 31 every year, or during a Special Enrollment Period if you qualify, such as after your employer coverage ends.

2. Research Coverage Options

There are two main ways to get Medicare coverage. You can enroll in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), which covers doctor and hospital visits, or join a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C). These plans are available through private health insurance companies, and they provide the same coverage as Parts A and B but may also cover vision, dental, hearing, and prescription medications.

Medicare Supplement insurance and standalone prescription drug plans (Part D) are available, as well, to help enhance Original Medicare coverage. You should explore all these options before enrolling to make sure you choose the best coverage for your situation.
